Jin Shin Jyutsu
Jin Shin Jyutsu means “The Art (Jyutsu) of the Creator (Sin) through a compassionate person (Jin).” This ancient Japanese healing method is based on the belief that everyone has the ability to maintain their own energetic balance.

This Japanese healing method is based on the belief that everyone has the ability to maintain their own balance.
On this page, you can learn more about the background of Jin Shin Jyutsu, how it is practiced at Energetisch Centrum Leonardus, and Jin Shin Jyutsu self-treatment.
In the 20th century, Jin Shin Jyutsu was rediscovered by the Japanese master Jiro Murai (1886–1961). After a lifetime of excessive eating and drinking, he became so ill that he was declared terminally ill. As his last wish, he asked his family to carry him to a mountain cabin.
Here he lived for 8 days in complete seclusion, spending his days fasting, meditating, and practicing the art he later called Jin Shin Jyutsu. Murai dedicated his life to further developing the technique behind this art—which restores balance to life energy—and to researching its effects. His student, the Japanese-American Mary Burmeister, was the one who subsequently introduced this art to the rest of the world.
This is Jin Shin Jyutsu
The philosophy of Jin Shin Jyutsu revolves around the free and balanced flow of life energy through your body, mind, and spirit. Using simple hand techniques on specific points, it is possible to restore emotional balance, relieve pain, and reduce the causes of acute and chronic symptoms.
It is a gentle and non-invasive healing method that allows the person being treated to relax easily and surrender to the treatment. This enables them to open themselves fully to the healing process. Like acupuncture and acupressure, Jin Shin Jyutsu focuses on the flow of energy in the body. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, this is achieved through 26 Safety Energy Locks (SELs); when one or more of these locks are “blocked,” energy no longer flows, and symptoms arise.
The Energy Locks
The 26 VES correspond to different “depths.” Jin Shin Jyutsu is based on the existence of six depths. These depths correspond to different functions, emotions, attitudes, elements, planets, zodiac signs, seasons, days, colors, musical notes, tastes, and smells. By applying the treatment to the point that corresponds to a specific depth, harmony is restored at that level.
Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment activates a person’s self-healing ability. It is the starting point for getting energy to flow. In addition, I work with the person to identify the underlying cause and determine the source of their complaint. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause is essential for bringing about lasting change. Read here to learn how you can treat yourself using the Jin Shin Jyutsu hand techniques.
Jin Shin Jyutsu: The Treatment Method at Leonardus
I first encountered Jin Shin Jyutsu in 1982. At the time, as a teenager, I was working at a racehorse breeding farm where I trained and cared for the horses. Through this close contact, a strong bond with the horses developed naturally. Unconsciously, I was already able to treat the horses at that time because of my high frequency, even though it wasn’t yet purposeful or based on a specific methodology. That doesn’t mean, however, that it had no effect on the horses. One example is Delicieus, a horse who had been officially retired from racing. I was able to treat him in such a way that he was even able to compete again. In fact, he went on to win four major races.

The Beginning
My understanding of energy-based treatments—and specifically the effects of Jin Shin Jyutsu—began when one of my other horses, Double Dutch, became lame. Veterinarians and other specialists couldn’t figure out why his left leg wouldn’t heal. That changed when I met a woman who practiced Jin Shin Jyutsu and had psychic abilities. She immediately sensed that there was an energy blockage in the back. After three energy treatments, Double Dutch had recovered. Not by focusing on the leg itself, but on the underlying cause.
This marked the beginning of my journey into energy work and energy-based healing methods. After trying out numerous different theories and techniques and taking a variety of courses, I ultimately returned to Jin Shin Jyutsu. This is the method that works best for me in addressing blockages at their core—a method that has a positive influence on the mind, spirit, and body.
The Treatment
During a treatment, I work through all 26 Safety Energy Locks to release all blockages. By applying light pressure to specific points in the body, the locks open and the energy can resume its natural flow. Thanks to the energy I channel into the treatment—my frequency is twice that of the average person—I can easily “vibrate away” even the deeper blockages. This makes the treatments highly effective. The process of vibrating away the blockages is completely effortless and painless. During the treatment, you may feel the energy flowing again, though sometimes you won’t feel anything at all. Either is fine.
An imbalance in your life energy manifests itself in signs such as pain, emotions like fear and anger, or a (serious) illness. These are signs because they serve as an invitation to adjust the way you live your life and view the world. Thanks to the treatment, energy begins to flow again, and stuck blockages linked to a specific issue can be released and processed.
You can reconnect with your own strength, take control of your life, and be open to new insights, opportunities, and challenges. Jin Shin Jyutsu isn’t necessarily a “quick fix”; depending on the issue, multiple treatments may be needed. The effectiveness of the treatment depends entirely on your own commitment—your commitment to applying the insights you’ve gained in a new way.
Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Treatment
In addition to the treatments at Leonardus, you can also “take care of yourself” by using simple self-treatment techniques: the Jin Shin Jyutsu breathing technique and hand positions.
Treatment with Leonardus therefore also requires action on the part of the recipient to bring about real change. Sometimes the end result is a full recovery; sometimes it is welcome relief from a serious illness; but it always involvessetting energy in motion to achieve total conscious BEING.
Jin Shin Jyutsu Breathing
The Power of Breathing
Breathing is the simplest and most effective way to restore your own energy balance. After all, with every breath, you inhale not only oxygen but also the life energy that surrounds you. This energy is also known as ki (Japan), chi/qi (China), pneuma (Greece), or prana (Hindu cultures).
With every exhalation, you release physical tension, stress, and anxiety. It is, therefore, the most direct way to take in fresh energy and bring yourself into harmony. This makes it easier to reconnect with yourself and experience conscious BEING. It starts with proper and full basic breathing; it’s also beneficial to practice Jin Shin Jyutsu breathing daily.
The Breathing Exercise
How do you perform the breathing exercise?
The Jin Shin Jyutsu breathing technique only needs to be performed once a day, either sitting or lying down. It consists of 4 sets of 9 total breaths (in and out). If you lose count, just calmly start over. This brings the total to 36 conscious breaths, which in numerology symbolize a new beginning.
Here’s how to do the breathing exercise:
Close your eyes;
Breathe deeply into your lower abdomen without straining;
With each exhalation, visualize the energy flowing down the front of your body: from the crown of your head, to your throat, chest, abdomen, legs, and down to your toes;
With each inhalation, visualize bringing this energy back up, as it were. Through your toes, along the soles of your feet, your calves, the backs of your legs, your back, and your neck, all the way back to the crown of your head.
Jin Shin Jyutsu Handholds
Hands as "jumper cables"
An additional treatment that you can easily perform at home is to use your hands as “jumper cables,” as Mary Burmeister called them. By simply placing your hands on a specific spot, you can transfer life energy to that point. Hold your hand on a finger for a few minutes until youfeelarhythmic and steady pulsation. Jiro Murai discovered that treating each finger regulates approximately 14,400 bodily functions. This treatment therefore focuses on the hands.
This method can be done while standing, lying down, sitting, or even walking. It can be done at any time of day—even during a meeting at work or while watching TV. For a full treatment, use both hands and hold each finger for a few minutes until you feel the energy pulsing. Encircle the specific finger with your other hand.
Just as the left side of the body represents past emotions, the left hand represents them, while the right hand represents the present. The above describes the basics of self-treatment using the hands; in addition, Murai has researched and developed a range of mudras that have a positive effect on health.
The first 3 fingers
Thumb, Index Finger, and Middle Finger
- Thumb: This is the first level and represents the stomach and spleen, the processing and absorption of nutrients, and also the digestion of thoughts. The thumb is associated with worry; treatment brings peace. Element: Earth.
- Index Finger: This is the fourth level, which represents the kidneys and bladder, as well as flow and fluid movement. The associated emotion is fear; treatment fosters confidence. Element: water.
- Middle Finger: This is the third meridian, which represents the liver and gallbladder, and inner harmony. The emotion associated with it is anger, and harmonizing this finger brings the art of living. Element: consciousness.
The last 2 fingers & palm
Ring Finger, Little Finger, and Middle Finger (Palm Side)
- Ring Finger: This is the second finger in depth and represents the lungs and large intestine, as well as vitality, energy, and the essential rhythm of life. It is associated with sadness; treating it helps connect thought and emotion. Element: air.
- Pink: Is the fifth layer and represents the heart and the small intestine, as well as intuition and knowledge. The emotion associated with it is “pretending.” Harmony in this finger brings passion. Element: fire.
- Center of the palm: This is the sixth depth and represents the diaphragm and the navel, symbolizing total harmony. From a life of waiting to a state of unity and wholeness. Element: ether.
